This magnificent Santa Maria Church is built over the remains of a mosque. Built in the 13th Century its baroque facade is cherub and gargoyle laden. It has been frequently altered and is today a marvelous mix of architectural styles.
In the 15th Century the church was decimated and had to be rebuilt. The Church is instantly recognisable - it has two asymmetrical towers and over the doorway is a sculpture of the Virgin Mary by Juan Bautista Borja.
Step through the baroque doorway inside the Church and you will be hit by the grandeur and opulence of the Church. Absolutely magnificent, this building will take your breath away. The nave is an outstanding example of Valencian Gothic and the altar dates from the late 14th Century, whilst the font dates from the 15th Century. There is also a Valencian baroque organ from 1653 and valuable art dating back to the 15th Century.
Mass is still celebrated at the Santa Maria Basilica and times are on display in the Church.
